Mother Mother – O My Heart

NAME: Mother Mother
SINGLE: O My Heart
DATE: 21June2010

LABEL: Last Gang Records

RATING: 5/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Indie-rock-pop combo incinerate the competition

LOCATION: Canada

LINE UP: Ryan Guldemond (Vocals, Guitar) Molly Guldemond (Vocals, Synths) Jasmin Parkin (Vocals, Keys) Jeremy Page (Bass, Horns) Ali Siadat (Percussion)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Eclectic, Canadian pop-rocker quintet throwing down in the UK, after cutting a swath through their homeland and the USA, in support of their brand-spanking-new ‘O My Heart Album. Considering these guys started off in 07’, it is a crime it’s taken me this long to get on board.

SOUNDS LIKE: I slapped ‘O my heart’ in the player with absolutely no expectations, three seconds later I was intrigued, ten seconds later I was surprised, thirty five seconds later I’d sold my soul. In just over half a minute, I’d been offered hints of the dark undertones of Arcade Fire, the jerky abrasive style of the Caesars, and the assured punk deliver of the Pixies. Wow.

This isn’t a cynical by-the-numbers mish-mash though; it’s vibrant, and alive, and cool, and a little daring, and you never quite know where it’s going to take you next. Ultimately, the only real thing they share with the afore-mentioned groups is the inspirational creativity of their sound and the impassioned energy of their delivery. This is an absolutely banging pop track that deserves to absolutely mow down air-time this summer.

Is it just me or is there a lot of cool stuff coming out of Canada these days?
