Munk – Mondo Vagabondo

NAME: Munk
EP: Mondo Vagabondo
DATE: 18October2010

LABEL: Gomme Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Super Awesome Euro Disco Japes

LINE UP: Mathias Modica – all instruments, vocals, Clara Cometti – vocals, Francy Goertz – vocals, Ben Mono – bass

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Realeased on his own Gomme Records, ‘Mondo Vagabondo’ is Italio-German DJ Mathias Modica’s first E.P. following a string of smaller releases and remixes. Prior to this he’s collaborated with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy on instantly recognisable ‘Kick Out The Chairs!’ and Murphy’s influence is all over this record; an almost too-cool-to-live, DFA-esque shiny disco treat.

SOUNDS LIKE: This E.P is a joyful mixture of everything good about modern dance – particularly house, with every kind of fathomable synth slinkily wrapping round funky basslines. The melodies are fresh and new, forming an intoxicating combination of the finest Eurotrash with New York hipster cool. Vocals are delivered in a wealth of languages, adding to the psychedelic appeal of the tracks. Clara Cometti’s almost too-sweet voice makes opener ‘Violent Love’ shimmery yet sultry, while the deep, distorted vocal line at the core of ‘La Musica’ adds a slight hint of videogame menace to an otherwise thudding workout in synthesizers and urgent bass.

Modica’s keen ear for a good hook means this album would go down a treat anywhere – house parties, clubs, heck even when played on your iPod it may make you break out into a little dance on the street. Indeed, ‘Mondo Vagabondo’ will undoubtedly leave you hankering after more; at just five tracks it seems way too short – just as you’re beginning to unashamedly shake your funky stuff around your bedroom, microphone/hairbrush in hand, its all over. Awww..

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You have ears.

(or if you enjoy LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Felix Da Housecat and all their shiny friends)
