WHAT’S THE STORY?: Belgian ska. You’re aware of that huge industry, right? No? Well, there’s a good reason for that.

In their debut effort The World for Sale, it seems like Overweight may have cornered the market on home soil. Their DIY release smacks of all manner of bands hailing back to 90s American soft rock, particularly in the later stages when it was all so… accessible.

The typical hammy drama and fun naturally associated with ska is predominant in this offering, but it doesn’t seem to really stand out from the crowd. The desire of Gert Thielemans to sing in English is confounding, however, because his voice just isn’t suited to it. It’s another example of a band that could easily become an underground hit by singing in their native tongue (Flemish or French, assumedly). Gert just sounds like he’s deaf, for the honest, uncomfortable need for a better description.

There aren’t any really arresting tracks, though ‘Come Out Now’ has the most constituent parts of a song you want from the genre, if you’re desperate to separate them from one another – it goes through a range of emotions and reminds you of anything that picked up the feeling and pace in a soundtrack like that of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.

Otherwise, it’s an interesting yet ultimately flat album, despite their best intentions and undoubted talent. Better things may come, but let’s just hope they move past the benchmark set about 12 years ago and become more original. Re-establishing the language barrier may be the perfect first move. Besides, the market for this music will probably be much bigger in native countries.

SOUNDS LIKE: 90s pop-rock intertwined with basic ska, with little else.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You’re into Less Than Jake, New Found Glory, Bodyjar and such, but you have the occasional penchant for a brass section.
