Band: Placebo
Single: For What It’s Worth
Label: DREAMBROTHER LYD
Date of Release: 1 June 2009
Rating: 3/5
It’s no surprise to find festival whores Placebo releasing a single just ahead of the annual calendar of shenanigans in the great outdoors, but for all the love and adoration we have for the London three-piece, alas, ‘For What It’s Worth,’ will not be uttered in the same breath as previous classics like, ‘Bruise Pristine,’ ‘Pure Morning,’ and ‘This Picture,’ to name but a few.
Of course, the single does possess the classic Placebo trademarks RHV know and love – the pulsating bass line, the image provoking lyrics and the distinct tones of Brian Molko as the trio thrust into chorus, though the lack of an engaging riff that hooks you like barbwire will not capture the imagination of diehard Placebo fans. However, the natural rhythm and brief melodic repetition of chorus line might snare some young innocent seeping in from the Indie fringes (if this is you we recommend you check out aforementioned back catalogue!).
All in all, the first single release from the bands forthcoming album, ‘Battle For The Sun,’ is standard fare. Whether it’s worth shelling out your hard earned pennies for is up to you though it is ill advised. Wait for the album release on 8th June – though on this evidence we’re not convinced that’s going to be special needs either!
