Plants And Animals – La La Land

NAME: Plants And Animals
ALBUM: La La Land
DATE: 13September2010

LABEL: Secret City Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Talented, different, lacks some vitality.

LOCATION: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

LINE UP: Warren C. Spicer , Woodman , Nic Basque

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Plants And Animals new album has some real potential for greatness, there is a hint of both Grizzly Bear and British Sea Power in the breathy vocals, but they are often drowned out by the way the record has been produced. The fourth track ‘Undone Melody’ allows the vocals and lyrics into the foreground but this time at the cost of instrumentation. However ‘Kon Tiki’ complete with Hawaii appropriate sound effects, should have been the model for production on this album.

SOUNDS LIKE: The vocals and guitars, though both well executed, seem unable to peacefully coexist on this record and despite a couple of stand out tracks the way the songs have been recorded and produced leaves the album feeling slightly flat.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you’re willing to persevere with the bizarre production to extract some real hidden gems.
