WHAT’S THE STORY?: Second album from the brazen, Brightonian backwoodsmen as they attempt to prove once and for all that their brand of mish-mash rock/dance music is the superior Kung-Fu; with the aid of more guest features then you can shake a drumstick at.

SOUNDS LIKE: The idea behind Qemists sound has proved a solid one – rock, dnb and dub can all stroll about more or less hand-in-hand in musical matrimony and Spirit in the System doesn’t disappoint in this respect; several tracks feature surprisingly sensitive, and seemingly opposing, sections woven together flawlessly to provide some excellent dance floor fodder. But that’s it, it’s essentially fodder, there’s precious little which resolutely leaps out the grab one’s attention. Exception to the rule being ‘Revolution’, but that’s only because the opening section sounds similar to ‘Within You’ from ‘Jim Henson’s The Labyrinth’ and it morphs into a mediocre dub number almost immediately afterward anyway.

What really holds it back though is that the vocal sections are all cringe inducingly bad either in their delivery or lyrical content. Prime example being the robotised chorus “I’m a renegade, I’m a rebel” on ‘Renegade’; just laughably ridiculous unless I’m missing some grand ironic subtext. The only track which isn’t absolutely pig-thick awful in this respect is Jenna G’s contribution on ‘Hurtless’ which still isn’t world-blowing by any stretch of the imagination.

For all the talent and effort involved here, this is a surprisingly uninspiring and pedestrian end product. It’ll please the midnight masses and precious few else, which is a waste of this vaunted ‘fusion sound’ because they’ll accept just about anything at 2.00.am on a Saturday morning.
