WHAT’S THE STORY?: Rihard Thompson, a stalwart of the folk rock scene in the United Kingdom, and beyond launches a new album of new music, recorded and performed in front of a live audience. The talented musician and writer is joined by four equally adept players, as he runs through 13 new songs, ranging from the angry, rock guitar infused opener ‘The Money Shuffle’ aimed at Banker’s who ruined the system, and then ran off with any of the other lucre, to ‘A Brother Slips away’, in homage to the many friends that the now 61 year old troubadour has lost along the way. Thompson’s well known dark sense of humour, and alternative way of looking at the world is on show throughout many of the songs, and although the songs may not be as worked on as they could have been, had they been recored in a studio, this new way of recording adds a level of excitement and immediacy that might have otherwise have been missing, and is all the better for that.
SOUNDS LIKE: superior music, made by talented musicians, and an audience having a good time hearing new music for the first time.
YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you like virtuoso guitar playing, dynamic musicianship, lyrics that mean something, and have an appreciation for the continuing career of this well respected stalwart.
