Robinson – That’s All I Really Want

NAME: Robinson
SINGLE: That’s All I Really Want
DATE: 22August2010

LABEL: Palawan Productions

FIVE WORD REVIEW: A soulful sprinkling of folk

LOCATION: Worcester, England

LINE UP: Andy Robinson (vocals,guitar)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: After listening to this single, I can immediately deduce that Robinson’s style of folk-rock is overwhelmingly inoffensive. Lyrics such as “I want good, clean fresh air” won’t necessarily resonate with today’s glamour-obsessed pop audience, but the track’s blunt earnestness will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the folk genre.

Moreover, the instrumentation is diverse within `That’s All I Really Want’, as a cello and a violin are encompassed to impressive effect. In contrast, the track’s lyrics fail to captivate the listener in the same fashion. “I want a place by the sea, with a record player” may convey a tranquil message, though it is subordinate to the discerning lyricism of Robinson’s folk counterparts, such as Frank Turner and City And Colour.

Seemingly, Bruce Springsteen was as a creative inspiration for the track’s climax, which radiates with the raw emotive passion that `The Boss’ has administered for decades.

The song’s main drawback is its lack of longevity. After numerous listens, the track devolves from an uplifting sample of prosperity, into a pedestrian folk song. Fans of the folk genre will enjoy `That’s All I Really Want’, whilst others may be discouraged by its innocuous nature.

SOUNDS LIKE: Nick Drake, Bruce Springsteen.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You’re a keen listener of folk music; or you enjoy tracks that rekindle memories of ITV’s village-based drama, Heartbeat.
