Röyksopp – Drug

NAME: Röyksopp
DATE: 9August2010

LABEL: Dog Triumph

FIVE WORD REVIEW: A barren wasteland of content.

LOCATION: Tromsø, Norway

LINE UP: Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland

WHAT’S THE STORY?: There’s almost no need to introduce Röyksopp, their peculiar blend of lo-fi techno has been tickling fans and critics alike for years, while proving once and again that Northern Europe really are the masters of esoteric electronic. Their latest release ‘Drug’ provides a taster of what to expect from brand new instrumental album ‘Senior’. Let’s hope it doesn’t derail the hype train.

SOUNDS LIKE: No such hope. This is quite frankly some of the most boring and pretentious trash to have been released in years. Masquerading as avant-garde trance it really has more in common with an ‘experimental’ piece of A-level music coursework. Filled with the most incredibly aggravating and boring stops and starts it’s like a nightmarish mobius strip, with each track loop gradually raising the listener’s blood pressure. You’re forced to suffer through three and half minutes of this utter drivel before anything remotely interesting happens… and then nothing actually happens. It’s almost insultingly lazy.

Track two is simply a remix of this, but it’s essentially like trying to multiply with zero: you start with nothing, you end with nothing.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You’re tone death. A slavish fan.
