Sea of Bees – The Woods

NAME: Sea of Bees
SINGLE: The Woods
DATE: 18October2010

LABEL: Heavenly Recordings

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Pixie Dust and American Folk

LOCATION: Sacramento, California, USA

LINE UP: Julia Baenziger (Vocals/Guitar)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Singer songwriter from Cala-forn-i-a makes single ‘The Woods’ available on limited European release from October the 18th. Have to wait till February before album ‘Songs for the Ravens’ though.

SOUNDS LIKE: Guitar and girl. A time worn combo. This one has a whiff of that new age kookiness that’s so popular these days alongside the more familiar folk sensibilities. The kooky comes from the voice, I’m not sure if it’s a regional accent, but it certainly sounds distinct. Coy yet knowing, it’s rather like the musical equivalent of shyly staring at the ground twiddling your fingers, a cheeky smile on your lips. It does tread a fine line between enchanting and annoying though, in a similar manner to kook-contemporary Johanna Newsom.

Not much to say about B-side ‘Lightfriend’, it’s fairly similar in style to the A-track, but clocking in at just under a minute feels like a promo of something that’s going to be released next year. Or you could just interpret it as a Melt-Banana tribute written for the glockenspiel.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you once imagined a fantasy scenario where Bjork or the Knife had an American musical heritage.
