Shinedown – Devour

Artist: Shinedown
Single: Devour
Album: Sound of Madness
Label: Atlantic Records
Release date: November 17 2008
Rating: 3/5

The new single from Florida-based five-piece, Shinedown is taken from their forthcoming album, ‘Sound of Madness,’ produced by Grammy Award winner Rob Cavallo and set for release in March next year. Reminiscent of Disturbed and White Zombie there was an initial burst of anticipation, but when it began to drift into Evanescence melodies, the early promise was shattered into tiny pieces.

That said, there are some engaging riffs, the verse is punchy, but the chorus is far too sloppy and repels rather than embraces. There are some noticeable qualities to Shinedown – which I can only describe as pop-metal – angst-ridden, powerful, melodic, all good properties I’m sure you’ll agree, but in trying to appeal to a mainstream market lose the steel and punch of this genre that would earn them respect amongst peers and true metal fans.
