Story Of The Year – The Black Swan

Artist: Story Of The Year
Title: The Black Swan
Label: Epitaph
Year: 2008
Rating: 2/5

Produced by the same people who’ve worked with the likes of The Used and Atreyu, you’d be forgiven for assuming ‘The Black Swan’ is over produced and sugar coated, because it is, but don’t let that put you off as their friendlier breed of Metalcore ain’t too bad!

Story Of The Year are one of those bands who are too heavy for one scene and not heavy enough for another. The Hardcore scene is saturated with an elite minority and fringe-clad hanger-oners, the Metal scene wouldn’t give them the time of day and there’s too much screaming and twiddly solos for them to be Alternative Rock – fortunately though, there’s a big market for bands with an identity crisis and if ‘Wake Up’ was unleashed on the airwaves it’d go down a treat with just the right amount of stadium sized hooks, energetic vocals and catchy beats to appeal to the masses.

Story Of The Year aren’t technically brilliant and don’t seem all that interested in bringing anything new to their music, which is a shame because while they’re grabbing your attention with the upbeat and quirky ‘Angel In The Swamp’ or the wonderful piano driven ‘Terrified’ they have the potential to do something that’d really set the music scene on fire. Whether you’ll like ‘The Black Swan’ or not depends entirely on exactly how Pop you like your Rock or how Rock you like your Pop. Judge for yourself.
