FIVE WORD REVIEW: Energized electro new wave punk

LINE UP: Tom Pether: Vox Richard Summers: Guitar Mike Smith: Bass Matt Constantine: Keys/Cello Ben Howe: Drum

WHAT’S THE STORY?: The five years following their conception in 2006 has seen London based band Suzerain through sheer hard work play the capital’s best venues and gain a fervent following. Their edgy rock sound carrying a flavour of late seventies new wave, has made heads, eyes, and ears turn their way as well as gaining them a strong reputation nationwide and a swelling positive response within the rest of Europe. With Suzerain’s debut album Midnight In The Drawn City soon to be released they have produced a four track sampler of a few of the delights the release will hold.

Current single ‘What Happened’ is a flashy slice of indie punk with striding impressive riffs and a poppy keyboard led chorus. The blend between Matt Constantine’s swirling smooth keys and the striking guitar of Richard Summers is perfect, both equally prominent but never dominating the other or the darker rhythm attack of Mike Smith and Ben Howe on bass and drums respectively. The vocals of frontman Tom Pether is the final factor that makes the track pulsate in the ear with his energetic and expressive delivery, the sense of mild irritancy and urgency making a great tone to match the track. ‘Shark Bait’ drops the pace a touch having a harder feel than the previous song. It is a mix of the lighter touch of Maximo Park and rock punk edge of Reuben and though maybe not a song to be on your lips long after it ends it is a satisfying and well crafted track. Suzerain’s debut single
‘Apocalypse Disco’ and the first indication for people of the high energy sound of the quintet is a high tempo indie pop blast and an instant welcome and indication of the bands direction.”Our aim was to produce the most awesome danceable rock possible.” guitarist Summers has said and it is evident throughout these four tracks that they have delivered. ‘Leave It There’ completes the offerings and again brings more energized indie punk with driving riffs and irresistible hooks.

With these four tracks of quality music there really is no option but to eagerly wait and dive into Suzerain’s new album when it sees the light of day. The album is produced by produced by Grammy award winner Steve Lyon (Depeche Mode, The Cure, Siouxsie Sioux) and promises a release that will figure on many people’s albums of the year list come December.

SOUNDS LIKE: Reuben, Maximo Park,

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: punk new wave sounds tempered with indie pop melodic keyboards flavours are your taste.
