The Fabulists – Dog Violets

LABEL: Zube Records

RATING: 3/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: warm inviting lyricism, lacking instrumentally

WHAT’S THE STORY?: There is an obvious Badly Drawn Boy quality to Shaun Milton’s voice, and there is the same plain yet endearing charm. Despite delicate harmonies from Hermione Love, in parts the album feels under produced and the brass parts needed to add a third dimension are barely audible. Nevertheless, Dog Violets is a brave album punctuated with heartfelt lyrics.

SOUNDS LIKE: A band living up to there namesake, they capture some of the spirit of English folklore, though they may venture in to book on tape territory at points.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: If lyrics are your priority rather than instrumentation and polished production.
