It’s practically impossible for any new, or even new-ish, band to hit the scene without being compared to other bands from the same city. In this case, Antwerpers The Hickey Underworld have been compared to Millionaire and dUES, and while there might be a couple of comparisons such as the fuzzy guitar sound in places and swirling melodies, they’re very much like no other.
Messy, cathartic and awkward riffs sit surprisingly fluidly over the Refused-esque backbone to give this record a real hardcore feel. Lead single ‘Blonde Fire’ is a thumping rock anthem and has a fantastic video to accompany it, while on the other end of the scale ‘Blue World Order’ is bleak, twisted and heavy.
There’s plenty to get your teeth into with this record, so if you’re missing the 90s and love hard, crunchy, riff-driven, angular music then this is something that belongs in your collection.
