WHAT’S THE STORY?: The worst thing about a lot of breakthrough acts in the UK at the moment is that they forsake the chance to have fun to simply set themselves up as “different”. The Tym Scopes Band do neither.

That sounds damning, yet it’s excellent in reality. You see, these guys have the formula down for a good rock song. A shrill-yet-memorable riff leads into a few power chords, followed by clear-as-day lyrics you can sing along to. Really, is there anything more you need from a tune in this genre?

There are no discernable influences as such; they just seem to be comfortable in their approach. While Scopes’ vocals could do with a little work, and the tune itself gets a little bit repetitive, the drum work is supportive and basic when necessary, just like the bass. It’s a standard offering, yet a top-notch one at that. There’s really not much else to say.

One does, however, wonder what they’re up to with self-promotion, and it’s a little worrying for their prospects. Although they have a MySpace account, it feels largely abandoned and doesn’t give any real information. It’s always a bit uncomfortable when the much-maligned Tom Anders is still the first person in their friends list too, never mind there not being a definitive list of band members, songs, or anything of proper value (it would’ve been nice to see the single cover too!).

So yeah, Tym Scopes and co, listen up: your music’s great, but bear in mind that MySpace will always show up first in Google, not your undeveloped mailing list-style website. Do a better job of promoting yourselves, then we’ll talk. You’re likeable, though. You have kind faces.

Release that album of yours, too. It can only be concluded that you guys are going on to better things, judging by this tune.

SOUNDS LIKE: Good honest 70’s-style rock action.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like uncomplicated, fun music. The Tym Scopes Band has pretty much nailed it.
