The Who – Greatest Hits / Greatest Hits Live

NAME: The Who
ALBUM: Greatest Hits / Greatest Hits Live
YEAR: 2010 (8th February)
LABEL: Polydor

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Essential for your CD collection.

LINE UP: Roger Daltrey (vocals) / Pete Townshend (guitars) / John Entwhistle (bass) / Keith Moon (drums)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Pioneers of trashing guitars onstage, The Who formed in 1964 and have since sold over 100 million records. An A – Z of rock heroes site the band as a major influence, and the quartet were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990. Prior to this double album, surviving members Daltrey and Townsend released ‘Endless Wire’ in 2006 – a full 24 years after their previous offering, ‘It’s Hard’ in 1982. A performance during the halftime show of 2010 Superbowl coincided with the release of this 2-disc set.

SOUNDS LIKE: The Who. Classics such as ‘My Generation’, ‘Pinball Wizard’ and ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ are no surprise, whilst the theme songs from the CSI series also feature. The live disc has 16 tracks chosen by the band of rare performances from between 1965 and 2007, including a rendition of ‘Magic Bus’ in 1970 from Leeds University.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: ageless music, legendary showmen and one of the most essential eras in pop culture.
