This City – Black and Blue

NAME:This City
SINGLE: Black and Blue
YEAR: 2010 (April 19th)
LABEL: Epitaph
RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Fun, danceable disco-jerk rhythms

LOCATION: Brighton, United Kingdom

LINE UP: Chris Purr (Vocals), Arran Day (Guitar), Grant Coleman (Guitar & Vocals), George Travis (Bass & Vocals) and Nick Burdett (Drums)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: The opening riff sounds like something from an early Rival Schools album, and it’s only when the vocals kick in that you’re reminded that it’s completely different. ‘Black And Blue’ is the next track off ‘This City’s’ critically acclaimed debut album ‘We Were Like Sharks’ released last October, produced by Matt Bayles (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Fall of Troy, Mastadon). The single is released just in time to celebrate the end of a successful bout of Hadouken support slots followed by their own headline tour across Europe. Following previous tours with Rival Schools, Taking Back Sunday, Set Your Goals and Eagles of Death Metal, the hardcore outfit are staying true to form, mixing indie melodies with emotional hardcore and new-age punk. The single features a soft riff which could be compared to a Bloc Party single – during the bridge especially – but on a bed of thundering drums, with vocals courtesy of Chris Purr which could potentially give Cedric Bixler (At the Drive In/Mars Volta fame) a run for his money.

SOUNDS LIKE: Rival Schools, mixed in with At the Drive In and Bloc Party, !Forward Russia!
