Thomas Tantrum – Sleep

NAME: Thomas Tantrum
DATE: 27March2011

LABEL: Stranger Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Anything But A Tantrum, Thomas!

LOCATION: Southampton, UK

LINE UP: Megan Thomas (vox, guitar), Dave Wade Brown (drums, vox), Dave Milatt (guitar, vox), Jim Shivers (bass, vox)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Gliding into the soulful groove of ‘Sleep’, vocalist Megan Thomas springs Thomas Tantrum to life after a long winter of hibernation. Slow-on-the-tail of their critically acclaimed eponymous debut album, the Southampton based quartet have returned with a more mature and fulfilling sound.

As both guitar and bass work harmoniously, lurking and weaving between a galloping drumbeat and a steady chordal chime, Thomas’ vocal provides the hook. Sailing effortlessly through the mix with frequent falsetto embellishments, she exhibits an attitude and swagger akin to Gwen Stefani.

The chorus echoes the call for summer, complete with sunkissed fairytale harmonies and a jovial drumbeat enchanted with a sense of swing. The refrain of ‘wakey wakey, it’s time to wake up now’ provides the staple of cheese to go alongside this feast of pop, and whilst the band have near perfected their infectious soulful blend, I would love to hear them in a tantrum.

SOUNDS LIKE: Team Waterpolo, Fight Like Apes, Johnny Foreigner

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like your poppy rock, or blonde female singers whose first name doesn’t turn out to be Thomas.
