Turisas – Stand Up And Fight

NAME: Turisas
ALBUM: Stand Up And Fight
DATE: 28February2011

LABEL: Century Media

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Finns return, sounding increasingly serious…

LINE UP: Warlord Nygard – vocals, orchestral programming & keyboards / Jussi Wickstrom – guitar, acoustic guitar/ Olli Vanska – acoustic and electric violin / Hannes Horma – bass, backing vocals / Netta Skog – accordion / Tude Lehtonen – drums and percussion

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Since Turisas’ first album ‘Battle Metal’ in 2004, the Finnish sextet has become quietly renowned across the underground music world. It’s not only their rambunctious live shows which have thrilled gig-goers – the naked sauna scenes and blood-like paint daubed across their torsos makes a Turisas show one to remember. The monster riffs, soaring battle-cries and “lei-lei-lei” choruses are utterly divine.

After extensive touring, their second release ‘The Varangian Way’ was released in 2007; a wholly more intricate collection of songs than ‘Battle Metal’, a self-proclaimed concept album. And now, this third studio release ‘Stand Up And Fight’ is described by frontman Mathias Nygard as “a loose continuation of the story [from the second album]”.

SOUNDS LIKE: With ‘Stand Up And Fight’, Turisas have honed their maturing sound. Gone are the brawling drinking songs, the rollicking anthems and the stomp-a-long choruses. In their place are cinematic soundscapes, sophisticated orchestral parts and indulgent production. Whilst the attention to detail is immaculate and unfaultable, part of what made Turisas unique is lost. ‘Stand Up And Fight’ verges towards the style of Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia project, or even the on-going sagas of Rhapsody / Rhapsody Of Fire.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You get excited about film soundtracks, and prefer a symphony orchestra over a rowdy party song.
