Two Spot Gobi – Guiding Star

NAME: Two Spot Gobi
SINGLE: Guiding Star
DATE: 28February2011

LABEL: Independent Records Limited

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Your mum might like it

LOCATION: Brighton, UK

LINE UP: James Robinson, vocals; Rob Lewis, cello; Dino Randhawa, guitar; Ben Daniel, bass; Matt Ellis, trumpet; Ben Matthews, drums.

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Two Spot Gobi. Not actually a band comprised of dissident mermen punks, but a group of Perez Hilton favoured, young Brightonians who play Organic Pop (possibly this means it’s stocked in Waitrose?)

They have an album out on 16/05/11!

SOUNDS LIKE: This is essentially the modern version of that time honoured staple, the cheesy power ballad, but trades raw emotional STRENGTH for coffee bar playability. Still just as ridiculous in terms of romantic mawkishness though, as can be seen with a chorus that goes:

“I’m coming to find Yoooooooouu~”
*Harmonies* “Uuuuuuhhhhhh~”

There’s no denying there’s a bit of sharp technical ability on display here – the gentle cello tickling that leads the track in is particularly sweet. It’s just that no matter how well they play, there’s no escaping this is chiefly defined by its James Blunty, Radio Heady, blandness.

No ‘umph’ whatsoever and roughly as exciting as discovering your Sunday paper accidently came packed with not one, but two (2!) biopic DVDs on Denis Thatcher.

DVDs were quite good actually.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You need a background track to play in the kitchen while attempting to follow Jamie Oliver on your Iphone.
