Young Fathers – Automatic/Dancing Mantaray

NAME: Young Fathers
SINGLE: Automatic/Dancing Mantaray
DATE: 21June2010

LABEL: Black Sugar

RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Only If You Like R&B

LOCATION: UK

LINE UP: Not mentioned on their MySpace page or their CD sleeve.

WHAT’S THE STORY?: It’s a dilemma – who should be reviewing a group like this? Should it be someone who likes American-accented, half-rapping, repetitive stuff? Or should it, by necessity, be someone who doesn’t? Because this is a very specific style, and if you like this style then you’ll probably like this release. The lead track, Automatic, would probably do Dizzee Rascal and everyone else who’s into the dancey rap stuff proud. Dancing Mantaray is a much slower, R&B beat type of a song that really cries out for an accompanying car with tinted windows and a couple of subs in the back in which to cruise around town, bobbing your head along trying to look ‘ard. On the other hand, if all of the above descriptions don’t appeal to you, then you’ll find this kind of music annoying, unimaginative and the kind of thing that makes you switch radio stations.

SOUNDS LIKE: slightly more interesting r&b, dance rap stuff. But only slightly.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: Dizzee Rascal, if he were to sing in an American accent, and there were three of him, all wearing red suits.
