WHAT’S THE STORY?: The “delicious” Edinburgh based trio are back with a new single, ‘Fevers Worse’, but the question is, are they “Straight Back On It” (sorry, I really couldn’t help myself)? Famed for their Spank Rock inspired party tunes, a notable 2009 performance at T in the Park, and being rappers from er.. Scotland, Young Fathers have a twist to share in their electro rap tale.

Pulsing and edgy, the track begins with a backdrop that sets a tormented scene, with vocal loops quick to add their dark colours to an already restless imagery. The tense refrain of ‘my fever’s worse’ combined with the underlying bubbling pulse of the electronic beat is entrancing. Exhibiting hypnotic characteristics paralleled with Massive Attack, Young Fathers are veering more towards trip(py hip)-hop than the usual floor-groovers (I hope this term is still down with the kids?) that fans are used to.

Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see an up-and-coming band experimenting and looking to add more sonic booms to their arsenal in these early stages of their career. I just hope I can shake this fever by the time their debut album drops this spring.

SOUNDS LIKE: Spank Rock, De La Soul, The Cool Kids
