LIVE! – Awolnation

ARTIST: Awolnation
SUPPORT: N/A
VENUE, TOWN: Camden Barfly, London
DATE: 2nd August 2010
RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Funkin’ painful. But worth it.

MAIN REVIEW: Tonight is LA quintet Awolnation’s first ever London gig. Playing the middle set of five bands, they already have a warmed up crowd suitably tipsy and ready for the onslaught. Or perhaps not. See, Awolnation are nothing that you might expect. They merge electronica, hip-hop, metal and drum and bass, and churn out something that no one is quite sure how to pigeon-hole.

They look like they belong working in the backroom of Argos, which makes it all the stunning when their bass-heavy sounds thunder through the PA. This isn’t just loud. This shakes your chest ’til you feel like you need to throw up. ‘Said’ is a dirty, fat glitchy tune, kicked in the gutter and wallowing in its own mess. Fantastic. Closer ‘Burn It Down’ sounds like Andrew WK’s bastard little brother bouncing off the walls after too much ketamine.

No doubt Awolnation are going to be leaping and bounding towards success in the latter half of 2010. And with every good reason. The only disappointment is such reliance on pre-programmed elements in their live set. And it’s a tad unfortunate that www.awolnation.com is already taken.
