Headliner: Fall Out Boy
Location: Brixton Academy
Date: Thursday 26th May 06
Rating: 3/5
Boasting over a million Myspace.com friends, Fall Out Boy are certainly flavour of the month amongst adolescents across the globe. So, on their extensive current tour, surely most of these ‘friends’ will do their best to see the five-piece. That certainly seems to be the way things are going tonight. Squealing, eye-liner coated teens in drainpipe jeans pack out Brixton’s Academy for the second night in a row to see the fast-rising Emo stars. The lights go down and Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ pounds through the venue as the band leaps onto the stage in co-ordinated military jackets.
Stopping mid-song to demand audience members in the mosh pit pick each other up if they fall down doesn’t interrupt the pace of the evening as the band blister though songs old (ish..) and new. ‘Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down’ gets a wave of star-tattooed arms swaying in the air as glitter confetti falls from the high ceiling, whilst between song banter leans heavily towards high school issues. The pure energy from both band and audience keeps the venue on fire as Fall Out Boy race around the stage, egging on the intensity of their fans.
Frantic and frenzied, six-stringer Joseph Trohman lobs his guitar at a roadie and launches himself into the air, landing on an hysterical crowd. With fans dragging him further from the stage with the strength of a five foot wave, a bouncer heaves him back onto the stage just in time for ’Best Kept Secret’, managing to get the entire venue to hold their arms, crossed at the elbow, in the air to promote a band signal is a mean feat although it’s clear that Fall Out Boy are utterly idolised by tonight’s London crowd.
An encore including hit ‘Dance, Dance’ goes down a treat as the crowd surfing peaks, but it’s all over too soon. Everything reeks of teenage Emo angst. But with as much energy as Fall Out Boy have stashed between them, it really is no wonder that they are the speedily growing alternative band of the moment, You definitely haven’t heard the last of these guys just yet.
