LIVE! – Jimmy Eat World

ARTIST: Jimmy Eat World
SUPPORT: Minus The Bear
VENUE, TOWN: Manchester Academy, Manchester
DATE: 22nd November 2010

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Arizona legends return in style.

MAIN REVIEW: Prior to the long awaited arrival of Arizona’s finest, Minus The Bear impress spectators with their addictive indie-pop. Latest album, Omni takes up a substantial portion of their set, which seems to capture the minds of the excitable Manchester crowd. The Seattle band have cultivated a devoted following and their performances on this tour could offer the platform required to elevate them to new heights.

Tonight’s gig sold out within a few days of tickets being released, signifying the partisan fan base that Jimmy Eat World have garnered over their fabled career. Therefore, when the Arizona quartet open with 2001’s thunderous ‘Bleed American’, it’s not surprising to see the room shaking from its foundations.

Following with ‘A Praise Chorus’ proves to be a blissful move, with the wide majority of the venue’s sold out crowd repeating every note sang by the band’s singer Jim Adkins. New tracks, ‘My Best Theory’ and ‘Movielike’ are also met with fervent receptions and it’s clearly that Jimmy Eat World’s 2 year absence from British shores has meant an arduous wait for their fans.

The group also honour their highly revered 1999 album Clarity, as For Me This is Heaven, Your New Aesthetic and a hypnotic Goodbye Sky Harbour appear in their set list. Many bands have a tendency to focus on their marketable newer material, but Jimmy Eat World clearly recognise that their audience wants to hear a variety of tracks from their incredible back catalogue.

‘23’ acts as the night’s highlight, as Adkins’ vocals soar through the room with indefinable sentiment and purpose, before the band wrap up proceedings by airing their landmark hits ‘The Middle’ and the irresistibly catchy ‘Sweetness’, creating mass jubilation in the process.
