LIVE! – Lostprophets

Band: Lostprophets
Support: Avenged Sevenfold, The Bronx
Date: Sunday 22nd February 2004
Venue: Brixton Academy
Rating: 3/5

I’m glad I turned up late and missed half of The Bronx’s set. If an overweight bald screaming man who dances as if electricity is being pumped through him is what floats your boat, then you may like this. I didn’t. In fairness, The Bronx is quite a powerful band with a raw sound and they managed to maintain that sound (even if it was shit) for half an hour or so. (0/10)

Avenged Sevenfold are slightly more bearable although I can’t help thinking of likenesses to Good Charlotte and Him whilst watching them perform. They charge through a stream of un-ending non-descript music although it’s at least a bit more interesting than the previous band. (3/10)

Finally, Lostprophets grace the stage and are greeted by 5,000 screaming fans. The band opens with a song from their new album and ploughs on through their set, rather non-commitally. Before properly greeting their fans, frontman Ian Watkins waits for a good few minutes whilst an adoring fan is pulled out the crowd, overcome by the sheer force of the audience during the opening song. Eventually, he screams about how great Brixton is and the show continues. Despite this being the last show of the tour, the Lostprophets are looking decidedly fed up and uninterested; there’s little interaction between band and audience; no encore; nothing to make this gig anything special at all. Shinobivsdragonninja, Last Train Home, Five Is A Four Letter Word and The Fake Sound Of Progress are all crowd-pleasing anthems, if not totally predictable, but all in all tonight has been a rather run of the mill affair. (5/10)
