LIVE! – Mastodon

ARTIST: Mastodon
SUPPORT: Totimoshi
VENUE, TOWN: Camden Roundhouse, London
DATE: 24th February 2010
RATING: 5/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Fact: Best live metal band.

MAIN REVIEW: Warming up the stage for Mastodon were Bay Area rockers Totimoshi. Sounding like the Melvins playing classic rock, with loads of meaty riffs, grit and balls, they surely won over some new fans and did a good job of buttering up the waiting punters.

RHV first saw Mastodon live six years ago, two inches deep in piss and being used as test subjects for ‘Leviathan’ material, though it was still a pleasure. Mastodon have grown dramatically since then and enjoyed well deserved acclaim. Opening with ‘Oblivion’ and then continuing to play ‘Crack The Skye’ in its entirety to the delight of the sold out, 3000 strong crowd, it was clear from the off that this show was going to be something quite special. From the thrashing riffs of ‘Divinations’ to the precision of ‘Ghost of Karelia’ and the epic, closing track ‘The Last Baron’, Mastodon nailed it.

If their encore wasn’t one of the most savage ever witnessed, then the pope is in fact, a Mormon. Hitting the stage like a runaway train, the mighty ‘Don ripped through another six songs from their back catalogue. ‘Circle Of Cysquatch’ was executed with the venom it deserves while the ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Remission’ era heavyweights such as ‘Iron Tusk’, ‘Aqua Dementia’, ‘Mother Puncher’ and closing song ‘March Of The Fire Ants’ ripped anyone within a mile radius a new one. To complete the experience, Mastodon had a phenomenal visual show to accompany; expanding on album themes and the band’s original imagery, it truly added something to the show.

Set List: 1. Oblivion | 2. Divinations | 3. Quintessence | 4. The Czar | 5. Ghost Of Karelia | 6. Crack The Skye | 7. The Last Baron | 8. Circle Of Cysquatch | 9. Aqua Dementia | 10. Where Strides The Behemoth | 11. Mother Puncher | 12. Iron Tusk | 13 March Of The Fire Ants
