FIVE WORD REVIEW: Faultless frolicking folk for friends

MAIN REVIEW: Lead singer Brian Briggs warms the crowd with his delightfully nerdy local trivia: it’s still legal to shoot a Welshman, with a bow and arrow, after dark, providing it’s within York city walls. But Stornoway’s charm doesn’t end with this delightful between song banter. Every song they play has charisma, their lyrics are thoughtful and unaffected, and their instrumentation is polished yet relaxed. They opened with ‘Fuel Up’, a crowd pleaser after their Jools Holland appearance, but audience enthusiasm didn’t waver when the Oxford foursome move on to lesser known tracks, like their current single ‘I Saw You Blink’. The inclusion of some of the bands more melancholy tracks – like ‘End Of The Movie’ -are the only thing missing, since they have proved so popular at some of their previous Yorkshire gigs. However, the band judged the disposition of its listeners perfectly; York University is seemingly lacking in musical guests who aren’t N-Dubz and the audience were understandably in the mood for dancing. Not just because Dappy was nowhere to be seen but because Stornoway make for a wonderful night, they are music by a bunch of friends for other bunches of friends, and if ‘We Are The Battery Human’ doesn’t make you want to go and play outside nothing will.
