FIVE WORD REVIEW: Energy, Emotion, Atmosphere found here!

MAIN REVIEW: A sold out tour across the UK suggests that this Australian group’s following is more than just a passing trend. Their album ‘Conditions’ (June ’09) has been met with high acclaim and their popularity has soared in recent months.

The Temper Trap explode onto stage with ‘Rest’, the soulful vocals, beating drum and echoing samples suddenly turning into an explosion of sound as the guitars kick in. The audience visably lifts off the ground as the band transfers their raw emotion from the stage to the eager watchers at the front. As they recall more tracks from ‘Conditions’ it’s apparent that the theme of verses building up to dramatic choruses is a key feature of their style. But the variety of instruments and sounds that The Temper Trap use keeps each song unique with its own personality, yet keeping the same magical atmosphere.

The top ten hit ‘Sweet Disposition’ is embraced warmly by the crowd, who sing along with a band enjoy playing it as much as the audience like hearing it, the pyrotechnics creating a starry sky circulating the band to great effect. Dougie Mandagi’s vocals are similar to Prince and the lyrics are often just as smooth. The backing vocals from the rest of the band add extra depth and the varied use of percussion is equally impressive. Prior to the encore the aptly named ‘Drum Song’ sees the end of the set off to a bang, Mandagi emptying a bottle of water onto a drum before playing it, the spray hitting the superbly timed strobe lighting to great effect.

If you haven’t seen The Temper Trap yet, get on the case. Who knows how long the energy and opportunity to experience this will last.
